With a simple but modern layout, the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Mini's all-aluminum casing puts it in a comparable category with Apple's laptops, giving the HP Mini a cool status combined with a lightweight functionality. Including an ExpressCard / 54 slot and mobility-sized keyboard already previously praised in earlier models, the HP Mini gets a lot of design kudos. Unfortunately, HP also stumbled on a netbook faux paus with the inclusion of the standard narrow cursor touchpad and side-mounted control buttons. Again, big-handed users will find this an annoying cause of cursor mistakes and glitches.

Performance is supported by the standard Atom N270 processor, but usability is boosted by inclusion of a larger 1024 x 576 resolution screen. Unfortunately, you will need to spend a little more to get the $30 optional six-cell battery which is a requirement if you want more than 2 hours of battery life with your netbook package. The HP 6-cell actually performs better than competitors, giving a reported 7 hours of web-browsing time compared to other netbooks of similar battery size.

Weighing in at exactly 2.62 pounds and shaped with 1.05 inches in thickness, the HP Mini is clearly built for the traveler and mobile office user. Body dimensions in total come in at 10x10.3x6.5 inches (HWD). This design makes the Mini 2140 both smaller and lighter than comparable competition.

Ports included are the same as many other netbooks, however, you do get a 54mm ExpressCard slot. This gives you the flexibility to switch over to a wireless-broadband card, and increasing your operability outside of common Wi-Fi hotzones (in other words, you can work where you want to with Wi-Fi rather than the closest Starbucks).

Regarding the design of the keyboard, the flat-top keys are close to 10 percent smaller than a traditional laptop keyboard and the function keys are located where you would expect to find them normally. There is far less reliance on the overlapping function button code keys in the HP. The right Enter and Shift keys are big, so large-handed folks are going to be pleased with the setup. As we noted earlier, the cursor pad leaves room for improvement however.

The display gives a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1,024x576. That makes it very comparable to the 1,024x600 resolution of the Eee PC 1002HA and Samsung NC10. Some argue the smidgen of missing pixels has an impact, but we're talking about a very marginal difference.

In the storage arena the HP Mini gives the same benefits as other netbooks, with a 160GB, 5,400rpm hard drive. You can get a faster 160GB, 7,200rpm model, but there's no storage improvement, just speed. The nice tweak is that with the Windows version both drives have HP's 3D DriveGuard. This protects you from drive damage when it senses jostling or a drop. It should be a standard feature on all netbooks given their mobility, but for now only HP offers this bonus.

A sleek outer shell, good metrics on performance and display, an added drive protection, and additional port flexibility gives you a good upper range netbook package for your money. More than likely catered to business types over students, the HP mini is still a nice competitor to go after if the price is not your top consideration and full office mobility is.

That said, these three laptops -- Sony VAIO, HP Pavilion, and Dell Latitude -- are all solid buys in a range of prices that is very competitive for brand new equipment. And they come from decent companies and offer you a range of features as well.

Sony VAIO N170GT

The nice thing about this Sony model is that it doesn't have a lot of junky frills on it. It is a clean looking design that is stylish, too. The screen is very bright, yet you don't get a lot of glare. The speed and performance is okay -- nothing to brag about, but for the price it's not bad. The battery is good for probably around four hours. That's enough to watch a movie if you're on a plane flight, but again -- nothing to write home about.

On the downside, this laptop uses an older Intel Core Duo processor. This processor comes with integrated graphics, which means that the performance is not to be that great. But again, you're not paying a lot of money, relatively speaking, or this laptop. If you're going to install Windows Vista on this machine you're going to want to upgrade the memory.

Overall, this model of Sony's VAIO gives you a good price, but doesn't give you a really powerful processor. But the laptop looks great and it's very stylish and attractive. If looks count and you want to save some bucks, this is a great machine. Brand-new, out-of-the-box this model will set you back about $1100 plus tax and shipping.

This laptop is part of the HP Pavilion DV6000 series, and it is designed to appeal to the mass market. It is a very stylish laptop with a shiny finish -- designed to appeal to the same customers who might consider a Sony or an Apple laptop. It's got a series of high-end components and multimedia features at a price that's lower than the comparable Dell laptop.

For example, this laptop has some pretty nice stereo speakers from Altec Lansing. They're located above the controls. But be aware that if you close the top the sound gets can get muffled. This laptop also has a 1.3 megapixel WebCam built right in, as well as two microphones. There is a row of buttons above the keyboard that launches different features like the media player, volume-control and playback. The keys look nice, but they make a really annoying beeping sound when you press them (and you can't really turn that off either).

This laptop weighs a little over 6 pounds, which makes it lighter than the comparable Dell laptop. When you add the AC adapter it brings the whole thing up to a little over 7 pounds.

The screen is 15.4 inches wide, with a kind of a shiny finish that makes colors very bright and vibrant, although it gives the appearance a bit of a glare in bright sunlight or next to a window.

The keyboard is very comfortable. The touchpad has an on-off button. This is very cool because it keeps your cursor from flying off in the wrong direction if your hand passes over the touchpad while using an external mouse. This laptop has a decent number of ports including a FireWire port, a VGA port, S-video and 3 USB 2.0 ports. You also get a microphone jack and two headphone jacks.

As far as processors go, you have a couple of choices. You can do a 1.86 GHz Celeron or a 2.0 GHz Core Duo. This laptop can be configured for up to 2 GB of RAM, and it'll work with hard drives of up to 200 GB in capacity.

Bottom line: it's got lots of entertainment features, you can configure it lots of different ways and it is very affordable. Brand-new out-of-the-box, you can get one for as little as $600-$800 plus tax and shipping.

The D series laptops from Dell use the Pentium M which comes in 1.3GHz, 1.4GHz, and 1.6GHz speeds--all paired with Intel's new 855PM chipset. You can this laptop with between 128MB - 2GB of fast 266MHz DDR SDRAM. It also comes with a faster 40GB hard drive, or a choice of 20GB, 30GB, and 60GB drives running at slower speed.

It's got a 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chip. There are a number of swappable modules for the single internal bay, including CD, DVD, CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW, floppy, a second hard drive, or a second battery.

The average-sized, 14.1-inch screen isn't super. But it comes with a pretty good 1,400x1,050 native resolution. (You can also save a few bucks by opting for the 1,024x768 display instead.)

It's very fast, and it includes an integrated wireless antenna that is of the dual-band type. This means that if you are within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot that runs either "b" or "g" wireless protocols, this laptop will be compatible with either protocol. It also has built-in Bluetooth.

Large high resolution display - This was important to me, as I would be spending a lot of time staring at the screen.
Multimedia sound - Nice to have for watching DVD movies while traveling.
Nice feeling keyboard - Perhaps one of the most overlooked criteria in selecting a laptop.
Good battery life - Reasonable power management to preserve battery life.
Cellular network card - To allow data connection to my office when no WiFi is available.

With these requirements in mind, I purchased the HP 8710w mobile workstation.

My first impression of the laptop was excellent. It had a solid built feeling and for the most part was ready to go when I unpacked it. Vista was the pre-loaded operating system, which made me a little nervous at first. However, with the 8710's Intel T8300 core duo processor and 2GB of RAM, it had all the horsepower under the hood to run Vista and my business applications with ease.

B. I installed my business applications

Even though I planned on accessing my office computer remotely, I still wanted to have a copy of my business applications installed locally on my Laptop. The main applications I installed included the following:

MS Office 2007 Professional

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

QuickBooks Pro 2008

Adobe Creative Suite CS3

All of these applications installed flawlessly and the new HP Laptop ran very well.

C. I installed the necessary software and hardware to connect to my office computer

Now that I had my applications installed, I had to decide how I would connect to my office computer. Since I already had a dedicated Internet connection on my work computer, I decided to use the existing connection I was already paying for. This all sounded pretty simple so far. However, how was I going to get Internet access where there was no WiFi or wired internet access available? Thanks to Sprint's newest breed of Mobile Broadband Cards, this proved to be easier than I thought. I purchased the Sprint AirCard 595 and a monthly access plan that was comparable in price to an average cell phone plan. The installation was a snap and the speed was surprisingly fast. It certainly wasn't as speedy as my cable Internet at home, but I found it to be every bit as fast as an average DSL connection. I should also mention that certain HP laptop models come equipped with Verizon's Edge cellular modem built in. However, I found Verizon's connection speed to be much slower than Sprint's.

With my internet connection in place, the next step was to figure out what software I would need to remotely control my office computer. After exploring the pros and cons of VPN, Windows Remote Desktop, Citrix and a few others, I decided to go with a product/service called LogMeIn.com. In a nutshell, I chose this product for a few basic reasons:

It didn't involve opening holes in my office firewall.
It is very secure.
It allows you to access your work computer remotely from anywhere you have internet access.

The LogMeIn configuration was simple and within a measly five minutes, I was ready to give it a test. I navigated to the LogMeIN website and entered my username and password. Once logged in, I saw an icon that represented my work computer. I clicked on the icon and within seconds I saw my office computer's desktop screen. It looked just like I was physically sitting there and I had access to all of my business applications.

Conclusion

So at the end of the day, did I earn the rank of a mobile warrior? Two weekends later, my family and I were heading north for a little camping and relaxation. My oldest son was driving and I was sitting in the passenger seat with my new HP laptop. With the click of a couple of icons, I was connected to the Internet via my Sprint Card and was working remotely on my office computer. For some reason, I was more impressed with this accomplishment than my wife.

Finding the best place to find good, reliable, and cheap laptops can be hard. But one thing is for sure. Cheap laptops like HP laptops are always an excellent choice when one desires robust computing performance.
